TB NETBible YUN-IBR Ref. Silang Nama Gambar Himne

Matius 6:22-23

Konteks

6:22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. If then your eye is healthy, 1  your whole body will be full of light. 6:23 But if your eye is diseased, 2  your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!

Matius 6:2

Konteks
6:2 Thus whenever you do charitable giving, 3  do not blow a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in synagogues 4  and on streets so that people will praise them. I tell you the truth, 5  they have their reward.

Titus 2:1-2

Konteks
Conduct Consistent with Sound Teaching

2:1 But as for you, communicate the behavior that goes with 6  sound teaching. 2:2 Older men are to be temperate, dignified, self-controlled, 7  sound in faith, in love, and in endurance. 8

Pengkhotbah 1:9

Konteks

1:9 What exists now 9  is what will be, 10

and what has been done is what will be done;

there is nothing truly new on earth. 11

Wahyu 3:17-18

Konteks
3:17 Because you say, “I am rich and have acquired great wealth, 12  and need nothing,” but 13  do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, 14  poor, blind, and naked, 3:18 take my advice 15  and buy gold from me refined by fire so you can become rich! Buy from me 16  white clothing so you can be clothed and your shameful nakedness 17  will not be exposed, and buy eye salve 18  to put on your eyes so you can see!

[6:22]  1 tn Or “sound” (so L&N 23.132 and most scholars). A few scholars take this word to mean something like “generous” here (L&N 57.107). partly due to the immediate context concerning money, in which case the “eye” is a metonymy for the entire person (“if you are generous”).

[6:23]  2 tn Or “if your eye is sick” (L&N 23.149).

[6:23]  sn There may be a slight wordplay here, as this term can also mean “evil,” so the figure uses a term that points to the real meaning of being careful as to what one pays attention to or looks at.

[6:2]  3 tn Grk “give alms,” but this term is not in common use today. The giving of alms was highly regarded in the ancient world (Deut 15:7-11).

[6:2]  4 sn See the note on synagogues in 4:23.

[6:2]  5 tn Grk “Truly (ἀμήν, amhn), I say to you.”

[2:1]  6 tn Grk “say what is fitting for sound teaching” (introducing the behavior called for in this chapter.).

[2:2]  7 tn Or “sensible.”

[2:2]  8 sn Temperate…in endurance. See the same cluster of virtues in 1 Thess 1:3 and 1 Cor 13:13.

[1:9]  9 tn Heb “what is.” The Hebrew verbal form is a perfect. Another option is to translate, “What has been.” See the next line, which speaks of the past and the future.

[1:9]  10 tn The Hebrew verbal form is an imperfect.

[1:9]  11 tn Heb “under the sun.”

[3:17]  12 tn Grk “and have become rich.” The semantic domains of the two terms for wealth here, πλούσιος (plousios, adjective) and πλουτέω (ploutew, verb) overlap considerably, but are given slightly different English translations for stylistic reasons.

[3:17]  13 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “but” to indicate the contrast present in this context.

[3:17]  14 tn All the terms in this series are preceded by καί (kai) in the Greek text, but contemporary English generally uses connectives only between the last two items in such a series.

[3:18]  15 tn Grk “I counsel you to buy.”

[3:18]  16 tn Grk “rich, and.” Because of the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, a new sentence was started here in the translation, repeating the words “Buy from me” to make the connection clear for the English reader.

[3:18]  17 tn Grk “the shame of the nakedness of you,” which has been translated as an attributed genitive like καινότητι ζωῆς (kainothti zwh") in Rom 6:4 (ExSyn 89-90).

[3:18]  18 sn The city of Laodicea had a famous medical school and exported a powder (called a “Phrygian powder”) that was widely used as an eye salve. It was applied to the eyes in the form of a paste the consistency of dough (the Greek term for the salve here, κολλούριον, kollourion [Latin collyrium], is a diminutive form of the word for a long roll of bread).
