[47:7] 1 tn The meaning of the Hebrew term מַשְׂכִּיל (maskil) is uncertain. The word is derived from a verb meaning “to be prudent; to be wise.” Various options are: “a contemplative song,” “a song imparting moral wisdom,” or “a skillful [i.e., well-written] song.” The term also occurs in the superscriptions of Pss 32, 42, 44, 45, 52-55, 74, 78, 88, 89, and 142. Here, in a context of celebration, the meaning “skillful, well-written” would fit particularly well.
[54:2] 2 tn Heb “to the words of my mouth.”
[66:8] 3 tn Heb “bless,” in the sense of declaring “God to be the source of…special power” (see HALOT 160 s.v. II ברך pi).
[66:8] 4 tn Heb “cause the voice of his praise to be heard.”
[94:7] 5 tn Heb “does not understand.”
[94:22] 6 tn Heb “and the
[94:22] 7 tn Heb “and my God [has become] a rocky summit of my safety.”
[104:21] 8 sn The lions’ roaring is viewed as a request for food from God.
[119:115] 9 tn The cohortative verbal form with vav (ו) conjunctive indicates purpose/result after the preceding imperative.
[119:115] 10 tn The psalmist has already declared that he observes God’s commands despite persecution, so here the idea must be “so that I might observe the commands of my God unhindered by threats.”
