Psalm 64 ¹ 

For the music director; a psalm of David.

64:1 Listen to me, ²  O God, as I offer my lament!

Protect ³  my life from the enemy’s terrifying attacks. ⁴ 

Mazmur 74:19

74:19 Do not hand the life of your dove ⁵  over to a wild animal!

Do not continue to disregard ⁶  the lives of your oppressed people!

Mazmur 86:13

86:13 For you will extend your great loyal love to me, ⁷ 

and will deliver my life ⁸  from the depths of Sheol. ⁹ 

Mazmur 89:48

89:48 No man can live on without experiencing death,

or deliver his life from the power of Sheol. ¹⁰  (Selah)

Mazmur 143:3

143:3 Certainly ¹¹  my enemies ¹²  chase me.

They smash me into the ground. ¹³ 

They force me to live ¹⁴  in dark regions, ¹⁵ 

like those who have been dead for ages.

[64:1]  ¹ sn Psalm 64. The psalmist asks God to protect him from his dangerous enemies and then confidently affirms that God will destroy his enemies and demonstrate his justice in the sight of all observers.

[64:1]  ³ tn The imperfect verbal form is used here to express the psalmist’s request.

[64:1]  ⁴ tn Heb “from the terror of [the] enemy.” “Terror” is used here metonymically for the enemy’s attacks that produce fear because they threaten the psalmist’s life.

[74:19]  ⁵ sn Your dove. The psalmist compares weak and vulnerable Israel to a helpless dove.

[86:13]  ⁷ tn Heb “for your loyal love [is] great over me.”

[86:13]  ⁸ tn Or “for he will have delivered my life.” The verb form indicates a future perfect here.

[143:3]  ¹⁵ sn Dark regions refers to Sheol, which the psalmist views as a dark place located deep in the ground (see Ps 88:6).
