[7:16]  1 tn Heb “his harm [i.e., the harm he conceived for others, see v. 14] returns on his head.”

[7:16]  2 tn Heb “and on his forehead his violence [i.e., the violence he intended to do to others] comes down.”

[13:6]  3 tn The verb form is cohortative, indicating the psalmist’s resolve (or vow) to praise the Lord when deliverance arrives.

[13:6]  4 tn Or “for he will have vindicated me.” The verb form indicates a future perfect here. The idiom גָמַל עַל (gamalal) means “to repay,” here in a positive sense.

[32:10]  5 tn Heb “many [are the] pains of evil [one].” The singular form is representative here; the typical evildoer, representative of the larger group of wicked people, is in view.

[32:10]  6 tn Heb “but the one who trusts in the Lord, faithfulness surrounds him.”

[44:15]  7 tn Heb “all the day my humiliation [is] in front of me.”

[44:15]  8 tn Heb “and the shame of my face covers me.”

[44:26]  9 tn Or “redeem us.” See Pss 25:22; 26:11; 69:18; 119:134.

[65:3]  10 tn Heb “the records of sins are too strong for me.”

[65:3]  11 tn Or “make atonement for.”

[65:6]  12 tn Heb “[the] one who establishes [the] mountains by his power.”

[65:6]  13 tn Heb “one [who] is girded with strength”; or “one [who] girds himself with strength.”

[68:29]  14 tn Heb “Be strong, O God, [you] who have acted for us, from your temple in Jerusalem.”

[68:29]  map For location see Map5 B1; Map6 F3; Map7 E2; Map8 F2; Map10 B3; JP1 F4; JP2 F4; JP3 F4; JP4 F4.

[69:7]  15 tn Heb “carry, bear.”

[69:7]  16 tn Heb “on account of you.”

[69:7]  17 tn Heb “and shame covers my face.”

[69:18]  18 tn Heb “come near my life and redeem it.” The verb “redeem” casts the Lord in the role of a leader who protects members of his extended family in times of need and crisis (see Ps 19:14).

[71:2]  19 tn Heb “in your vindication rescue me and deliver me.” Ps 31:1 omits “and deliver me.”

[71:2]  20 tn Heb “turn toward me your ear.”

[71:2]  21 tn Ps 31:2 adds “quickly” before “deliver.”

[78:65]  22 tn Heb “and the master awoke like one sleeping.” The Lord’s apparent inactivity during the time of judgment is compared to sleep.

[78:65]  23 tn Heb “like a warrior overcome with wine.” The Hebrew verb רוּן (run, “overcome”) occurs only here in the OT. The phrase “overcome with wine” could picture a drunken warrior controlled by his emotions and passions (as in the present translation), or it could refer to a warrior who awakes from a drunken stupor.

[89:17]  24 tn Heb “for the splendor of their strength [is] you.”

[89:17]  25 tn Heb “you lift up our horn,” or if one follows the marginal reading (Qere), “our horn is lifted up.” The horn of an ox underlies the metaphor (see Deut 33:17; 1 Kgs 22:11; Ps 92:10). The horn of the wild ox is frequently a metaphor for military strength; the idiom “exalt/lift up the horn” signifies military victory (see 1 Sam 2:10; Pss 75:10; 89:24; 92:10; Lam 2:17).

[110:7]  26 tn Here the expression “lifts up the head” refers to the renewed physical strength and emotional vigor (see Ps 3:3) provided by the refreshing water. For another example of a victorious warrior being energized by water in the aftermath of battle, see Judg 15:18-19 (see also 1 Sam 30:11-12, where the setting is different, however).

[115:17]  27 tn Heb “silence,” a metonymy here for death (see Ps 94:17).

[118:4]  28 tn Heb “fearers of the Lord.” See Ps 15:4.

[124:2]  29 tn Heb “rose up against us.”

[135:13]  30 tn Or “is forever.”

[135:13]  31 tn Heb “O Lord, your remembrance [is] for a generation and a generation.” See Ps 102:12.

[148:1]  32 sn Psalm 148. The psalmist calls upon all creation to praise the Lord, for he is the creator and sovereign king of the world.
