2:22 What does a man acquire from all his labor

and from the anxiety that accompanies his toil on earth? ¹

6:4 Though the stillborn child ²  came into the world ³  for no reason ⁴  and departed into darkness,

though its name is shrouded in darkness, ⁵ 

[2:22]  ¹ tn Heb “under the sun.” The rhetorical question is an example of negative affirmation, expecting a negative answer: “Man acquires nothing” (see E. W. Bullinger, Figures of Speech, 949-51).

[6:4]  ² tn Heb “he”; the referent (“the stillborn child”) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[6:4]  ³ tn The phrase “into the world” does not appear in Hebrew, but is added in the translation for clarity.
