[115:1]  1 sn Psalm 115. The psalmist affirms that Israel’s God is superior to pagan idols and urges Israel to place their confidence in him.

[115:1]  2 tn Or “give glory.”

[115:1]  3 sn The psalmist asks the Lord to demonstrate his loyal love and faithfulness, not simply so Israel may benefit, but primarily so that the Lord will receive honor among the nations, who will recognize, contrary to their present view (see v. 2), that Israel’s God is committed to his people.

[9:11]  4 tn Grk “God’s purpose according to election.”

[9:11]  5 tn Or “not based on works but based on…”

[9:11]  6 tn Grk “by the one who calls.”

[9:11]  sn The entire clause is something of a parenthetical remark.

[9:12]  7 sn Many translations place this verse division before the phrase “not by works but by his calling” (NA27/UBS4, NIV, NRSV, NLT, NAB). Other translations place this verse division in the same place that the translation above does (NASB, KJV, NKJV, ASV, RSV). The translation has followed the latter to avoid breaking the parenthetical statement.

[9:12]  8 sn A quotation from Gen 25:23.

[9:13]  9 sn A quotation from Mal 1:2-3.

[9:15]  10 sn A quotation from Exod 33:19.

[9:18]  11 sn There is a double connective here that cannot be easily preserved in English: “consequently therefore,” emphasizing the conclusion of what he has been arguing.

[9:18]  12 tn Grk “he”; the referent (God) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[9:18]  13 tn Grk “So then, he has mercy on whom he desires, and he hardens whom he desires.”

[9:21]  14 tn Grk “Or does not the potter have authority over the clay to make from the same lump.”

[9:21]  15 tn Grk “one vessel for honor and another for dishonor.”

[3:1]  16 sn See the note on Pharisees in 1:24.

[3:1]  17 tn Grk “a ruler of the Jews” (denoting a member of the Sanhedrin, the highest legal, legislative, and judicial body among the Jews).

[4:10]  18 tn Grk “answered and said to her.”

[4:10]  19 tn Or “if you knew.”

[4:10]  20 tn The phrase “some water” is supplied as the understood direct object of the infinitive πεῖν (pein).

[4:10]  21 tn This is a second class conditional sentence in Greek.

[4:10]  sn The word translated living is used in Greek of flowing water, which leads to the woman’s misunderstanding in the following verse. She thought Jesus was referring to some unknown source of drinkable water.
