Mazmur 109:1

Konteks
Psalm 109 6

For the music director, a psalm of David.

109:1 O God whom I praise, do not ignore me! 7

1 Samuel 19:4-5

Konteks

19:4 So Jonathan spoke on David’s behalf 8  to his father Saul. He said to him, “The king should not sin against his servant David, for he has not sinned against you. On the contrary, his actions have been very beneficial 9  for you. 19:5 He risked his life 10  when he struck down the Philistine and the Lord gave all Israel a great victory. When you saw it, you were happy. So why would you sin against innocent blood by putting David to death for no reason?”

1 Samuel 19:15

Konteks

19:15 Then Saul sent the messengers back to see David, saying, “Bring him up to me on his bed so I can kill him.”

1 Samuel 22:13-14

Konteks
22:13 Saul said to him, “Why have you conspired against me, you and this son of Jesse? You gave 11  him bread and a sword and inquired of God on his behalf, so that he opposes 12  me and waits in ambush, as is the case today!”

22:14 Ahimelech replied to the king, “Who among all your servants is faithful like David? He is the king’s son-in-law, the leader of your bodyguard, and honored in your house!

Amsal 17:13

Konteks

17:13 As for the one who repays 13  evil for good,

evil will not leave 14  his house. 15

Yeremia 18:20

Konteks

18:20 Should good be paid back with evil?

Yet they are virtually digging a pit to kill me. 16

Just remember how I stood before you

pleading on their behalf 17

to keep you from venting your anger on them. 18

Yohanes 10:32

Konteks
10:32 Jesus said to them, 19  “I have shown you many good deeds 20  from the Father. For which one of them are you going to stone me?”

[38:20]  1 tn Heb “the ones who repay evil instead of good accuse me, instead of my pursuing good.”

[109:3]  2 tn Heb “and [with] words of hatred they surround me.”

[109:4]  3 tn Heb “in place of my love they oppose me.”

[109:4]  4 tn Heb “and I, prayer.”

[109:5]  5 tn Heb “and they set upon me evil in place of good.”

[109:1]  6 sn Psalm 109. Appealing to God’s justice, the psalmist asks God to vindicate him and to bring severe judgment down upon his enemies.

[109:1]  7 tn Heb “do not be deaf.”

[19:4]  8 tn Heb “spoke good with respect to David.”

[19:4]  9 tn Heb “good.”

[19:5]  10 tn Heb “and he put his life into his hand.”

[22:13]  11 tn Heb “by giving.”

[22:13]  12 tn Heb “rises up against.”

[17:13]  13 tn The sentence begins with the participle מֵשִׁיב (meshiv, “the one who repays”). The whole first colon may be taken as an independent nominative absolute, with the formal sentence to follow. Some English versions have made the first colon a condition by supplying “if” (NAB, NIV, TEV, NLT).

[17:13]  14 tn The verb מוּשׁ (mush) means “to depart; to remove.” The Kethib is a Hiphil, which would yield a meaning of “to take away”; so the Qere, which is the Qal, makes more sense in the line.

[17:13]  15 sn The proverb does not explain whether God will turn evil back on him directly or whether people will begin to treat him as he treated others.

[18:20]  16 tn Or “They are plotting to kill me”; Heb “They have dug a pit for my soul.” This is a common metaphor for plotting against someone. See BDB 500 s.v. כָּרָה Qal and for an example see Pss 7:16 (7:15 HT) in its context.

[18:20]  17 tn Heb “to speak good concerning them” going back to the concept of “good” being paid back with evil.

[18:20]  18 tn Heb “to turn back your anger from them.”

[18:20]  sn See Jer 14:7-9, 19-21 and 15:1-4 for the idea.

[10:32]  19 tn Grk “Jesus answered them.”

[10:32]  20 tn Or “good works.”
