Paul’s Desire to Visit Rome

1:8 First of all, ¹  I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is proclaimed throughout the whole world.

Roma 4:18

4:18 Against hope Abraham ²  believed ³  in hope with the result that he became the father of many nations ⁴  according to the pronouncement, ⁵  “so will your descendants be.” ⁶ 

Roma 10:15-16

10:15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How timely ⁷  is the arrival ⁸  of those who proclaim the good news.” ⁹  10:16 But not all have obeyed the good news, for Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our report?” ¹⁰ 

Roma 11:8

11:8 as it is written,

“God gave them a spirit of stupor,

eyes that would not see and ears that would not hear,

to this very day.” ¹¹

16:26 but now is disclosed, and through the prophetic scriptures has been made known to all the nations, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith –

[1:8]  ¹ tn Grk “First.” Paul never mentions a second point, so J. B. Phillips translated “I must begin by telling you….”

[4:18]  ² tn Grk “he”; the referent (Abraham) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[4:18]  ³ tn Grk “who against hope believed,” referring to Abraham. The relative pronoun was converted to a personal pronoun and, because of the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, a new sentence was started here in the translation.

[4:18]  ⁴ sn A quotation from Gen 17:5.

[4:18]  ⁵ tn Grk “according to that which had been spoken.”

[4:18]  ⁶ sn A quotation from Gen 15:5.

[10:15]  ⁷ tn The word in this context seems to mean “coming at the right or opportune time” (see BDAG 1103 s.v. ὡραῖος 1); it may also mean “beautiful, attractive, welcome.”

[10:15]  ⁸ tn Grk “the feet.” The metaphorical nuance of “beautiful feet” is that such represent timely news.

[10:15]  ⁹ sn A quotation from Isa 52:7; Nah 1:15.
