Roma 9:31

9:31 but Israel even though pursuing ¹  a law of righteousness ²  did not attain it. ³ 

Efesus 2:12

2:12 that you were at that time without the Messiah, ⁴  alienated from the citizenship of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, ⁵  having no hope and without God in the world.

[9:31]  ¹ tn Or “who pursued.” The participle could be taken adverbially or adjectivally.

[9:31]  ² tn Or “a legal righteousness,” that is, a righteousness based on law. This translation would treat the genitive δικαιοσύνης (dikaiosunh") as an attributed genitive (see ExSyn 89-91).

[9:31]  ³ tn Grk “has not attained unto the law.”

[2:12]  ⁴ tn Or “without Christ.” Both “Christ” (Greek) and “Messiah” (Hebrew and Aramaic) mean “one who has been anointed.” Because the context refers to ancient Israel’s messianic expectation, “Messiah” was employed in the translation at this point rather than “Christ.”

[2:12]  ⁵ tn Or “covenants of the promise.”
