[1:15]  1 tn Or “selected”; Heb “took.”

[8:15]  2 tn Heb “flaming serpents”; KJV, NASB “fiery serpents”; NAB “saraph serpents.” This figure of speech (metonymy) probably describes the venomous and painful results of snakebite. The feeling from such an experience would be like a burning fire (שָׂרָף, saraf).

[8:15]  3 tn Heb “the one who brought out for you water.” In the Hebrew text this continues the preceding sentence, but the translation begins a new sentence here for stylistic reasons.

[11:4]  4 tn Heb “Reed Sea.” “Reed Sea” (or “Sea of Reeds”) is a more accurate rendering of the Hebrew expression יָם סוּף (yam suf), traditionally translated “Red Sea.” See note on the term “Red Sea” in Exod 13:18.

[11:4]  5 tn Heb “the Lord.” The pronoun has been used in the translation for stylistic reasons to avoid redundancy.

[11:4]  6 tn Heb “and the Lord destroyed them to this day” (cf. NRSV); NLT “he has kept them devastated to this very day.” The translation uses the verb “annihilated” to indicate the permanency of the action.

[12:31]  7 tn Heb “you must not do thus to/for the Lord your God.”

[12:31]  8 tn See note on this term at Deut 7:25.

[12:31]  9 tn Heb “every abomination of the Lord.” See note on the word “his” in v. 27.

[15:9]  10 tn Heb “your eye.”

[15:9]  11 tn Heb “your needy brother.”

[15:9]  12 tn Heb “give” (likewise in v. 10).

[15:9]  13 tn Heb “it will be a sin to you.”

[17:8]  14 tn Heb “between blood and blood.”

[17:8]  15 tn Heb “between claim and claim.”

[17:8]  16 tn Heb “between blow and blow.”

[17:8]  17 tn Heb “gates.”

[17:8]  18 tc Several Greek recensions add “to place his name there,” thus completing the usual formula to describe the central sanctuary (cf. Deut 12:5, 11, 14, 18; 16:6). However, the context suggests that the local Levitical towns, and not the central sanctuary, are in mind.

[21:16]  19 tn Heb “when he causes his sons to inherit what is his.”

[21:16]  20 tn Heb “the hated.”

[21:23]  21 tn The Hebrew text uses the infinitive absolute for emphasis, which the translation indicates by “make certain.”

[21:23]  22 tn Heb “hung,” but this could convey the wrong image in English (hanging with a rope as a means of execution). Cf. NCV “anyone whose body is displayed on a tree.”

[21:23]  23 sn The idea behind the phrase cursed by God seems to be not that the person was impaled because he was cursed but that to leave him exposed there was to invite the curse of God upon the whole land. Why this would be so is not clear, though the rabbinic idea that even a criminal is created in the image of God may give some clue (thus J. H. Tigay, Deuteronomy [JPSTC], 198). Paul cites this text (see Gal 3:13) to make the point that Christ, suspended from a cross, thereby took upon himself the curse associated with such a display of divine wrath and judgment (T. George, Galatians [NAC], 238-39).

[22:19]  24 tn Heb “for he”; the referent (the man who made the accusation) has been specified in the translation to avoid confusion with the young woman’s father, the last-mentioned male.

[22:19]  25 tn Heb “brought forth a bad name.”

[26:12]  26 tn Heb includes “the tithes of.” This has not been included in the translation to avoid redundancy.

[26:12]  27 tn The terms “Levite, resident foreigner, orphan, and widow” are collective singulars in the Hebrew text (also in v. 13).

[26:12]  28 tn Heb “gates.”

[28:15]  29 tn Heb “do not hear the voice of.”

[28:15]  30 tn Heb “and overtake you” (so NIV, NRSV); NAB, NLT “and overwhelm you.”

[31:29]  31 tn The Hebrew text uses the infinitive absolute for emphasis, which the translation indicates with “totally.”

[31:29]  32 tn Heb “do the evil.”

[31:29]  33 tn Heb “the work of your hands.”

[33:17]  34 sn Ephraim and Manasseh were the sons of Joseph who became founders of the two tribes into which Joseph’s descendants were split (Gen 48:19-20). Jacob’s blessing granted favored status to Ephraim; this is probably why Ephraim is viewed here as more numerous than Manasseh.
