32:16 They made him jealous with other gods, ¹ 

they enraged him with abhorrent idols. ²

A Divine Decision

2:20 The Lord was furious with Israel. ⁷  He said, “This nation ⁸  has violated the terms of the agreement I made with their ancestors ⁹  by disobeying me. ¹⁰ 

[32:16]  ¹ tc Heb “with strange (things).” The Vulgate actually supplies diis (“gods”).

[32:16]  ² tn Heb “abhorrent (things)” (cf. NRSV). A number of English versions understand this as referring to “idols” (NAB, NIV, NCV, CEV), while NLT supplies “acts.”

[2:14]  ³ tn Or “The Lord’s anger burned [or “raged”] against Israel.”

[2:14]  ⁴ tn Heb “robbers who robbed them.” (The verb שָׁסָה [shasah] appears twice in the verse.)

[2:14]  sn The expression robbers who plundered them is a derogatory reference to the enemy nations, as the next line indicates.

[2:14]  ⁵ tn Heb “sold them into the hands of.”

[2:14]  ⁶ tn The word “attacks” is supplied in the translation both for clarity and for stylistic reasons.
