5:22 The Lord said these things to your entire assembly at the mountain from the middle of the fire, the cloud, and the darkness with a loud voice, and that was all he said. ¹  Then he inscribed the words ²  on two stone tablets and gave them to me.

29:23 The whole land will be covered with brimstone, salt, and burning debris; it will not be planted nor will it sprout or produce grass. It will resemble the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the Lord destroyed in his intense anger. ¹⁸ 

Ulangan 30:9

30:9 The Lord your God will make the labor of your hands ¹⁹  abundantly successful and multiply your children, ²⁰  the offspring of your cattle, and the produce of your soil. For the Lord your God will once more ²¹  rejoice over you to make you prosperous ²²  just as he rejoiced over your ancestors,

[7:26]  sn The Hebrew word translated an object of divine wrath (חֵרֶם, kherem) refers to persons or things placed under God’s judgment, usually to the extent of their complete destruction. See note on the phrase “divine judgment” in Deut 2:34.

[7:26]  ⁵ tn This Hebrew verb (שָׁקַץ, shaqats) is essentially synonymous with the next verb (תָעַב, ta’av; cf. תּוֹעֵבָה, to’evah; see note on the word “abhorrent” in v. 25), though its field of meaning is more limited to cultic abomination (cf. Lev 11:11, 13; Ps 22:25).

[22:21]  ¹³ tn The Hebrew term נְבָלָה (nÿvalah) means more than just something stupid. It refers to a moral lapse so serious as to jeopardize the whole covenant community (cf. Gen 34:7; Judg 19:23; 20:6, 10; Jer 29:23). See C. Pan, NIDOTTE 3:11-13. Cf. NAB “she committed a crime against Israel.”

[24:5]  ¹⁶ tc For the MT’s reading Piel שִׂמַּח (simmakh, “bring joy to”), the Syriac and others read שָׂמַח (samakh, “enjoy”).

[29:18]  ¹⁷ tn Heb “yielding fruit poisonous and wormwood.” The Hebrew noun לַעֲנָה (la’anah) literally means “wormwood” (so KJV, ASV, NAB, NASB), but is used figuratively for anything extremely bitter, thus here “fruit poisonous and bitter.”

[29:23]  ¹⁸ tn Heb “the anger and the wrath.” This construction is a hendiadys intended to intensify the emotion.

[30:9]  ¹⁹ tc The MT reads “hand” (singular). Most versions read the plural.

[30:9]  ²⁰ tn Heb “the fruit of your womb” (so NAB, NIV); NRSV “of your body.”

[30:9]  ²¹ tn Heb “return and.” The Hebrew verb is used idiomatically here to indicate the repetition of the following action.

[30:9]  ²² tn The Hebrew text includes “for good.”
