1:3 Blessed is the one who reads the words of this ¹  prophecy aloud, ²  and blessed are ³  those who hear and obey ⁴  the things written in it, because the time is near! ⁵

3:2 Wake up then, and strengthen what remains that was about ⁶  to die, because I have not found your deeds complete ⁷  in the sight ⁸  of my God.

A New Heaven and a New Earth

21:1 Then ⁹  I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and earth had ceased to exist, ¹⁰  and the sea existed no more.

21:22 Now ¹¹  I saw no temple in the city, because the Lord God – the All-Powerful ¹²  – and the Lamb are its temple.

22:10 Then ¹³  he said to me, “Do not seal up the words of the prophecy contained in this book, because the time is near.

[1:3]  ¹ tn The word “this” is used to translate the Greek article τῆς (ths), bringing out its demonstrative force.

[1:3]  ² tn The word “aloud” has been supplied to indicate that in the original historical setting reading would usually refer to reading out loud in public rather than silently to oneself.

[1:3]  ³ tn The words “blessed are” are repeated from the beginning of this verse for stylistic reasons and for clarity.

[1:3]  ⁴ tn Grk “keep.” L&N 36.19 has “to continue to obey orders or commandments – ‘to obey, to keep commandments, obedience.’”

[1:3]  ⁵ sn The time refers to the time when the things prophesied would happen.

[3:2]  ⁶ tn The verb ἔμελλον (emellon) is in the imperfect tense.

[3:2]  ⁷ tn The perfect passive participle has been translated as an intensive (resultative) perfect here.

[3:2]  ⁸ tn Or “in the judgment.” BDAG 342 s.v. ἐνώπιον 3 states, “in the opinion/judgment of…As a rule…of θεός or κύριος; so after…πεπληρωμένος Rv 3:2.”

[21:1]  ⁹ tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence within the narrative.

[21:1]  ¹⁰ tn For the translation of ἀπέρχομαι (apercomai; here ἀπῆλθαν [aphlqan]) L&N 13.93 has “to go out of existence – ‘to cease to exist, to pass away, to cease.’”

[21:22]  ¹¹ tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “now” to indicate the transition to a new topic. Every verse from here to the end of this chapter begins with καί in Greek, but due to differences between Greek and contemporary English style, these have not been translated.

[21:22]  ¹² tn On this word BDAG 755 s.v. παντοκράτωρ states, “the Almighty, All-Powerful, Omnipotent (One) only of God…(ὁ) κύριος ὁ θεὸς ὁ π. …Rv 1:8; 4:8; 11:17; 15:3; 16:7; 21:22.”

[22:10]  ¹³ tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the vision.
