[18:5]  1 tn On ἐκολλήθησαν (ekollhqhsan) BDAG 556 s.v. κολλάω 2.a.β states, “fig. cling to = come in close contact with (cp. Ps 21:16; 43:26 ἐκολλήθη εἰς γῆν ἡ γαστὴρ ἡμῶν. The act.=‘bring into contact’ PGM 5, 457 κολλήσας τ. λίθον τῷ ὠτίῳ) ἐκολλήθησαν αἱ ἁμαρτίαι ἄχρι τ. οὐρανοῦ the sins have touched the heaven = reached the sky (two exprs. are telescoped) Rv 18:5.”

[18:5]  2 tn Or “up to the sky” (the same Greek word means both “heaven” and “sky”).

[18:5]  3 tn That is, remembered her sins to execute judgment on them.

[18:5]  4 tn Or “her sins.”

[2:26]  5 tn Or “who is victorious”; traditionally, “who overcomes.”

[2:26]  6 tn Grk “keeps.” In a context that speaks of “holding on to what you have,” the idea here is one of continued faithful behavior (BDAG 1002 s.v. τηρέω 3 has “ὁ τηρῶν τὰ ἔργα μου the one who takes my deeds to heart Rv 2:26”).

[2:26]  7 tn Or “over the Gentiles” (the same Greek word may be translated “Gentiles” or “nations”).

[7:3]  8 tn See the note on the word “servants” in 1:1.

[14:20]  9 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the vision.

[14:20]  10 sn The winepress was stomped. See Isa 63:3, where Messiah does this alone (usually several individuals would join in the process).

[14:20]  11 tn L&N 6.7 states, “In Re 14:20 the reference to a bit and bridle is merely an indication of measurement, that is to say, the height of the bit and bridle from the ground, and one may reinterpret this measurement as ‘about a meter and a half’ or ‘about five feet.’”

[14:20]  12 tn Grk “1,600 stades.” A stade was a measure of length about 607 ft (185 m). Thus the distance here would be 184 mi or 296 km.

[20:5]  13 sn This statement appears to be a parenthetical comment by the author.

[12:11]  14 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “but” to indicate the contrast.

[12:11]  15 sn They did not love their lives. See Matt 16:25; Luke 17:33; John 12:25.

[15:8]  16 tn Grk “power, and no one.” A new sentence was started here in the translation. Here καί (kai) has been translated as “thus” to indicate the implied result of the temple being filled with smoke.

[17:17]  17 tn Grk “hearts.”

[17:17]  18 tn Or “his intent.”

[17:17]  19 tn The infinitive ποιῆσαι (poihsai) was translated here as giving the logical means by which God’s purpose was carried out.

[17:17]  20 tn On this term BDAG 203 s.v. γνώμη 4 states, “declaration, decision, resolution…of God Rv 17:17.”

[17:17]  21 tn For this translation see BDAG 168 s.v. βασιλεία 1.a, “kingship, royal power, royal rule.

[17:17]  22 tn Or “completed.”

[20:3]  23 tn Grk “he”; the referent (the angel introduced in v. 1) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[20:3]  24 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the vision.

[20:3]  25 tn Or “and shut.” While the lexical force of the term is closer to “shut,” it is acceptable to render the verb ἔκλεισεν (ekleisen) as “locked” here in view of the mention of the key in the previous verse.

[2:10]  26 tn Grk “is about to throw some of you,” but the force is causative in context.

[2:10]  27 tn Or “tempted.”

[2:10]  28 tn Or “experience persecution,” “will be in distress” (see L&N 22.2).

[2:10]  29 tn Grk “crown of life,” with the genitive “of life” (τῆς ζωῆς, th" zwh") functioning in apposition to “crown” (στέφανον, stefanon): “the crown that consists of life.”
