Yesaya 1:6

1:6 From the soles of your feet to your head,

there is no spot that is unharmed. ¹ 

There are only bruises, cuts,

and open wounds.

They have not been cleansed ²  or bandaged,

nor have they been treated ³  with olive oil. ⁴ 

Yesaya 1:31

1:31 The powerful will be like ⁵  a thread of yarn,

their deeds like a spark;

both will burn together,

and no one will put out the fire.

Yesaya 5:29

5:29 Their roar is like a lion’s;

they roar like young lions.

They growl and seize their prey;

they drag it away and no one can come to the rescue.

Yesaya 22:22

22:22 I will place the key ⁶  to the house of David on his shoulder. When he opens the door, no one can close it; when he closes the door, no one can open it.

Yesaya 41:9

41:9 you whom I am bringing back ⁷  from the earth’s extremities,

and have summoned from the remote regions –

I told you, “You are my servant.”

I have chosen you and not rejected you.

Yesaya 46:1

The Lord Carries His People

46:1 Bel ⁸  kneels down,

Nebo ⁹  bends low.

Their images weigh down animals and beasts. ¹⁰ 

Your heavy images are burdensome to tired animals. ¹¹ 

[1:6]  ¹ tn Heb “there is not in it health”; NAB “there is no sound spot.”

[1:6]  ² tn Heb “pressed out.”

[1:6]  ³ tn Heb “softened” (so NASB, NRSV); NIV “soothed.”

[1:6]  ⁴ sn This verse describes wounds like those one would receive in battle. These wounds are comprehensive and without remedy.

[1:31]  ⁵ tn Heb “will become” (so NASB, NIV).

[22:22]  ⁶ sn This may refer to a literal insignia worn by the chief administrator. Even so, it would still symbolize the administrator’s authority to grant or exclude access to the king. See J. N. Oswalt, Isaiah (NICOT), 1:422.

[41:9]  ⁷ tn Heb “whom I have taken hold of [i.e., to lead back].”

[46:1]  ⁸ sn Bel was the name of a Babylonian god. The name was originally associated with Enlil, but later was applied to Marduk. See HALOT 132 s.v. בֵּל.

[46:1]  ⁹ sn Nebo is a variation of the name of the Babylonian god Nabu.

[46:1]  ¹⁰ tn Heb “their images belong to animals and beasts”; NIV “their idols are borne by beasts of burden”; NLT “are being hauled away.”

[46:1]  ¹¹ tn Heb “your loads are carried [as] a burden by a weary [animal].”
