[10:11]  1 tn The statement is constructed as a rhetorical question in the Hebrew text: “Is it not [true that] just as I have done to Samaria and its idols, so I will do to Jerusalem and its idols?”

[10:11]  sn This statement indicates that the prophecy dates sometime between 722-701 b.c.

[10:25]  2 tc The Hebrew text has simply “fury,” but the pronominal element can be assumed on the basis of what immediately follows (see “my anger” in the clause). It is possible that the suffixed yod (י) has been accidentally dropped by virtual haplography. Note that a vav (ו) is prefixed to the form that immediately follows; yod and vav are very similar in later script phases.

[13:5]  3 tn Heb “from the end of the sky.”

[13:5]  4 tn Or “anger”; cf. KJV, ASV “the weapons of his indignation.”

[13:5]  5 tn Or perhaps, “land” (so KJV, NAB, NASB, NLT). Even though the heading and subsequent context (see v. 17) indicate Babylon’s judgment is in view, the chapter has a cosmic flavor that suggests that the coming judgment is universal in scope. Perhaps Babylon’s downfall occurs in conjunction with a wider judgment, or the cosmic style is poetic hyperbole used to emphasize the magnitude and importance of the coming event.

[13:18]  6 tn Heb “and bows cut to bits young men.” “Bows” stands by metonymy for arrows.

[13:18]  7 tn Heb “the fruit of the womb.”

[13:18]  8 tn Heb “their eye does not.” Here “eye” is a metonymy for the whole person.

[23:11]  9 tn Heb “his hand he stretched out over the sea.”

[23:11]  10 tn Heb “the Lord.” For stylistic reasons the pronoun (“he”) has been used in the translation here.

[23:11]  11 tn Heb “concerning Canaan, to destroy her fortresses.” NIV, NLT translate “Canaan” as “Phoenicia” here.

[37:11]  12 tn Heb “Look, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all the lands, annihilating them.”

[37:11]  13 tn Heb “and will you be rescued?” The rhetorical question expects the answer, “No, of course not!”

[38:13]  14 tn The verb form in the Hebrew text is a Piel from שָׁוַה (shavah). There are two homonyms שָׁוַה, one meaning in the Piel “level, smooth out,” the other “set, place.” Neither fits in v. 13. It is likely that the original reading was שִׁוַּעְתִּי (shivvati, “I cry out”) from the verbal root שָׁוַע (shava’), which occurs exclusively in the Piel.

[38:13]  15 tn Heb “from day to night you bring me to an end.”

[45:2]  16 tc The form הֲדוּרִים (hadurim) makes little, if any, sense here. It is probably a corruption of an original הָרָרִים (hararim, “mountains”), the reduplicated form of הָר (har, “mountain”).

[45:2]  17 tn That is, on the gates. Cf. CEV “break the iron bars on bronze gates.”
