[13:17]  1 tn Heb “against them”; NLT “against Babylon.”

[13:17]  2 sn They cannot be bought off, for they have a lust for bloodshed.

[19:3]  3 tn Heb “and the spirit of Egypt will be laid waste in its midst.”

[19:3]  4 tn The verb בָּלַע (bala’, “confuse”) is a homonym of the more common בָּלַע (bala’, “swallow”); see HALOT 135 s.v. I בלע.

[19:3]  5 tn Heb “they will inquire of the idols and of the spirits of the dead and of the ritual pits and of the magicians.” Hebrew אוֹב (’ov, “ritual pit”) refers to a pit used by a magician to conjure up underworld spirits. See the note on “incantations” in 8:19.

[42:17]  6 tn Heb “be ashamed with shame”; ASV, NASB “be utterly put to shame.”

[48:2]  7 tn Heb “they call themselves [or “are called”] from the holy city.” The precise meaning of the statement is uncertain. The Niphal of קָרָא (qara’) is combined with the preposition מִן (min) only here. When the Qal of קָרָא is used with מִן, the preposition often indicates the place from which one is summoned (see 46:11). So one could translate, “from the holy city they are summoned,” meaning that they reside there.

[48:2]  8 tn Heb “lean on” (so NASB, NRSV); NAB, NIV “rely on.”
