TB NETBible YUN-IBR Ref. Silang Nama Gambar Himne

Yesaya 13:9

Konteks

13:9 Look, the Lord’s day of judgment 1  is coming;

it is a day of cruelty and savage, raging anger, 2

destroying 3  the earth 4

and annihilating its sinners.

Yesaya 13:11

Konteks

13:11 5 I will punish the world for its evil, 6

and wicked people for their sin.

I will put an end to the pride of the insolent,

I will bring down the arrogance of tyrants. 7

Yesaya 30:12-14

Konteks

30:12 For this reason this is what the Holy One of Israel says:

“You have rejected this message; 8

you trust instead in your ability to oppress and trick, 9

and rely on that kind of behavior. 10

30:13 So this sin will become your downfall.

You will be like a high wall

that bulges and cracks and is ready to collapse;

it crumbles suddenly, in a flash. 11

30:14 It shatters in pieces like a clay jar,

so shattered to bits that none of it can be salvaged. 12

Among its fragments one cannot find a shard large enough 13

to scoop a hot coal from a fire 14

or to skim off water from a cistern.” 15

[13:9]  1 tn Heb “the day of the Lord.”

[13:9]  2 tn Heb “[with] cruelty, and fury, and rage of anger.” Three synonyms for “anger” are piled up at the end of the line to emphasize the extraordinary degree of divine anger that will be exhibited in this judgment.

[13:9]  3 tn Heb “making desolate.”

[13:9]  4 tn Or “land” (KJV, NAB, NASB, NIV, NLT).

[13:11]  5 sn The Lord is definitely speaking (again?) at this point. See the note at v. 4.

[13:11]  6 tn Or “I will bring disaster on the world.” Hebrew רָעָה (raah) could refer to the judgment (i.e., disaster, calamity) or to the evil that prompts it. The structure of the parallel line favors the latter interpretation.

[13:11]  7 tn Or perhaps, “the violent”; cf. NASB, NIV “the ruthless.”

[30:12]  8 tn The sentence actually begins with the word “because.” In the Hebrew text vv. 12-13 are one long sentence.

[30:12]  9 tn Heb “and you trust in oppression and cunning.”

[30:12]  10 tn Heb “and you lean on it”; NAB “and depend on it.”

[30:13]  11 tn The verse reads literally, “So this sin will become for you like a breach ready to fall, bulging on a high wall, the breaking of which comes suddenly, in a flash.” Their sin produces guilt and will result in judgment. Like a wall that collapses their fall will be swift and sudden.

[30:14]  12 tn Heb “Its shattering is like the shattering of a jug of [i.e., “made by”] potters, [so] shattered one cannot save [any of it].”

[30:14]  13 tn The words “large enough” are supplied in the translation for clarification.

[30:14]  14 tn Heb “to remove fire from the place of kindling.”

[30:14]  15 tn On the meaning of גֶבֶא (geveh, “cistern”) see HALOT 170 s.v.
