TB NETBible YUN-IBR Ref. Silang Nama Gambar Himne

Yesaya 19:23

Konteks

19:23 At that time there will be a highway from Egypt to Assyria. The Assyrians will visit Egypt, and the Egyptians will visit Assyria. The Egyptians and Assyrians will worship together. 1

Yesaya 36:11

Konteks

36:11 Eliakim, Shebna, and Joah said to the chief adviser, “Speak to your servants in Aramaic, 2  for we understand it. Don’t speak with us in the Judahite dialect 3  in the hearing of the people who are on the wall.”

Yesaya 51:6

Konteks

51:6 Look up at the sky!

Look at the earth below!

For the sky will dissipate 4  like smoke,

and the earth will wear out like clothes;

its residents will die like gnats.

But the deliverance I give 5  is permanent;

the vindication I provide 6  will not disappear. 7

[19:23]  1 tn The text could be translated, “and Egypt will serve Assyria” (cf. NAB), but subjugation of one nation to the other does not seem to be a theme in vv. 23-25. Rather the nations are viewed as equals before the Lord (v. 25). Therefore it is better to take אֶת (’et) in v. 23b as a preposition, “together with,” rather than the accusative sign. The names of the two countries are understood to refer by metonymy to their respective inhabitants.

[36:11]  2 sn Aramaic was the diplomatic language of the Assyrian empire.

[36:11]  3 tn Or “in Hebrew” (NIV, NCV, NLT); NAB, NASB “in Judean.”

[51:6]  4 tn Heb “will be torn in pieces.” The perfect indicates the certitude of the event, from the Lord’s rhetorical perspective.

[51:6]  5 tn Heb “my deliverance.” The same Hebrew word can also be translated “salvation” (so KJV, NAB, NASB, NIV, NRSV, NLT); cf. CEV “victory.”

[51:6]  6 tn Heb “my righteousness [or “vindication”].”

[51:6]  7 tn Heb “will not be shattered [or “dismayed”].”
