2:13 for all the cedars of Lebanon,

that are so high and mighty,

for all the oaks of Bashan; ¹ 

Yesaya 32:13

32:13 Mourn ²  over the land of my people,

which is overgrown with thorns and briers,

and over all the once-happy houses ³ 

in the city filled with revelry. ⁴ 

Yesaya 37:4

37:4 Perhaps the Lord your God will hear all these things the chief adviser has spoken on behalf of his master, the king of Assyria, who sent him to taunt the living God. ⁵  When the Lord your God hears, perhaps he will punish him for the things he has said. ⁶  So pray for this remnant that remains.’” ⁷ 

Yesaya 37:31

37:31 Those who remain in Judah will take root in the ground and bear fruit. ⁸ 

[2:13]  ¹ sn The cedars of Lebanon and oaks of Bashan were well-known for their size and prominence. They make apt symbols here for powerful men who think of themselves as prominent and secure.

[32:13]  ² tn “Mourn” is supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons. In the Hebrew text vv. 12-13 are one long sentence.

[32:13]  ³ tn Heb “indeed, over all the houses of joy.” It is not certain if this refers to individual homes or to places where parties and celebrations were held.

[32:13]  ⁴ sn This same phrase is used in 22:2.

[37:4]  ⁵ tn Heb “all the words of the chief adviser whom his master, the king of Assyria, sent to taunt the living God.”

[37:4]  ⁶ tn Heb “and rebuke the words which the Lord your God hears.”

[37:4]  ⁷ tn Heb “and lift up a prayer on behalf of the remnant that is found.”

[37:31]  ⁸ tn Heb “The remnant of the house of Judah that is left will add roots below and produce fruit above.”
