TB NETBible YUN-IBR Ref. Silang Nama Gambar Himne

Yesaya 2:19

Konteks

2:19 They 1  will go into caves in the rocky cliffs

and into holes in the ground, 2

trying to escape the dreadful judgment of the Lord 3

and his royal splendor,

when he rises up to terrify the earth. 4

Yesaya 7:20

Konteks
7:20 At that time 5  the sovereign master will use a razor hired from the banks of the Euphrates River, 6  the king of Assyria, to shave the head and the pubic hair; 7  it will also shave off the beard.

Yesaya 18:4

Konteks

18:4 For this is what the Lord has told me:

“I will wait 8  and watch from my place,

like scorching heat produced by the sunlight, 9

like a cloud of mist 10  in the heat 11  of harvest.” 12

Yesaya 28:4

Konteks

28:4 The withering flower, its beautiful splendor,

situated at the head of a rich valley,

will be like an early fig before harvest –

as soon as someone notices it,

he grabs it and swallows it. 13

Yesaya 36:12

Konteks
36:12 But the chief adviser said, “My master did not send me to speak these words only to your master and to you. 14  His message is also for the men who sit on the wall, for they will eat their own excrement and drink their own urine along with you!” 15

Yesaya 50:10

Konteks

50:10 Who among you fears the Lord?

Who obeys 16  his servant?

Whoever walks in deep darkness, 17

without light,

should trust in the name of the Lord

and rely on his God.

Yesaya 57:15

Konteks

57:15 For this is what the high and exalted one says,

the one who rules 18  forever, whose name is holy:

“I dwell in an exalted and holy place,

but also with the discouraged and humiliated, 19

in order to cheer up the humiliated

and to encourage the discouraged. 20

Yesaya 66:17

Konteks

66:17 “As for those who consecrate and ritually purify themselves so they can follow their leader and worship in the sacred orchards, 21  those who eat the flesh of pigs and other disgusting creatures, like mice 22  – they will all be destroyed together,” 23  says the Lord.

[2:19]  1 tn The identity of the grammatical subject is unclear. The “idols” could be the subject; they will “go” into the caves and holes when the idolaters throw them there in their haste to escape God’s judgment (see vv. 20-21). The picture of the idols, which represent the foreign deities worshiped by the people, fleeing from the Lord would be highly polemical and fit the overall mood of the chapter. However it seems more likely that the idolaters themselves are the subject, for v. 10 uses similar language in sarcastically urging them to run from judgment.

[2:19]  2 tn Heb “dust”; ASV “into the holes of the earth.”

[2:19]  3 tn Heb “from the dread of the Lord,” that is, from the dread that he produces in the objects of his judgment.” The words “trying to escape” are supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[2:19]  4 tn Or “land.” It is not certain if these verses are describing the judgment of Judah (see vv. 6-9) or a more universal judgment on all proud men.

[7:20]  5 tn Heb “in that day” (so ASV, NASB); KJV “In the same day.”

[7:20]  6 tn Heb “the river” (so KJV); NASB “the Euphrates.” The name of the river has been supplied in the present translation for clarity.

[7:20]  7 tn Heb “the hair of the feet.” The translation assumes that the word “feet” is used here as a euphemism for the genitals. See BDB 920 s.v. רֶגֶל.

[18:4]  8 tn Or “be quiet, inactive”; NIV “will remain quiet.”

[18:4]  9 tn Heb “like the glowing heat because of light.” The precise meaning of the line is uncertain.

[18:4]  10 tn Heb “a cloud of dew,” or “a cloud of light rain.”

[18:4]  11 tc Some medieval Hebrew mss, with support from the LXX, Syriac Peshitta, and Latin Vulgate, read “the day.”

[18:4]  12 sn It is unclear how the comparisons in v. 4b relate to the preceding statement. How is waiting and watching similar to heat or a cloud? For a discussion of interpretive options, see J. N. Oswalt, Isaiah (NICOT), 1:362.

[28:4]  13 tn Heb “which the one seeing sees, while still it is in his hand he swallows it.”

[36:12]  14 tn Heb “To your master and to you did my master send me to speak these words?” The rhetorical question expects a negative answer.

[36:12]  15 tn Heb “[Is it] not [also] to the men…?” The rhetorical question expects the answer, “Yes, it is.”

[36:12]  sn The chief adviser alludes to the horrible reality of siege warfare, when the starving people in the besieged city would resort to eating and drinking anything to stay alive.

[50:10]  16 tn Heb “[who] listens to the voice of his servant?” The interrogative is understood by ellipsis (note the preceding line).

[50:10]  17 tn The plural indicates degree. Darkness may refer to exile and/or moral evil.

[57:15]  18 tn Heb “the one who dwells forever.” שֹׁכֵן עַד (shokhenad) is sometimes translated “the one who lives forever,” and understood as a reference to God’s eternal existence. However, the immediately preceding and following descriptions (“high and exalted” and “holy”) emphasize his sovereign rule. In the next line, he declares, “I dwell in an exalted and holy [place],” which refers to the place from which he rules. Therefore it is more likely that שֹׁכֵן עַד (shokhenad) means “I dwell [in my lofty palace] forever” and refers to God’s eternal kingship.

[57:15]  19 tn Heb “and also with the crushed and lowly of spirit.” This may refer to the repentant who have humbled themselves (see 66:2) or more generally to the exiles who have experienced discouragement and humiliation.

[57:15]  20 tn Heb “to restore the lowly of spirit and to restore the heart of the crushed.”

[66:17]  21 tn Heb “the ones who consecrate themselves and the ones who purify themselves toward the orchards [or “gardens”] after the one in the midst.” The precise meaning of the statement is unclear, though it is obvious that some form of idolatry is in view.

[66:17]  22 tn Heb “ones who eat the flesh of the pig and the disgusting thing and the mouse.”

[66:17]  23 tn Heb “together they will come to an end.”
