Yesaya 3:8

3:8 Jerusalem certainly stumbles,

Judah falls,

for their words and their actions offend the Lord; ¹ 

they rebel against his royal authority. ² 

Yesaya 24:1

The Lord Will Judge the Earth

24:1 Look, the Lord is ready to devastate the earth

and leave it in ruins;

he will mar its surface

and scatter its inhabitants.

Yesaya 40:5

40:5 The splendor ³  of the Lord will be revealed,

and all people ⁴  will see it at the same time.

For ⁵  the Lord has decreed it.” ⁶ 

Yesaya 53:4

53:4 But he lifted up our illnesses,

he carried our pain; ⁷ 

even though we thought he was being punished,

attacked by God, and afflicted for something he had done. ⁸ 

[3:8]  ¹ tn Heb “for their tongue and their deeds [are] to the Lord.”

[3:8]  ² tn Heb “to rebel [against] the eyes of his majesty.” The word כָּבוֹד (kavod) frequently refers to the Lord’s royal splendor that is an outward manifestation of his authority as king.

[40:5]  ³ tn Or “glory.” The Lord’s “glory” is his theophanic radiance and royal splendor (see Isa 6:3; 24:23; 35:2; 60:1; 66:18-19).

[40:5]  ⁴ tn Heb “flesh” (so KJV, ASV, NASB); NAB, NIV “mankind”; TEV “the whole human race.”

[40:5]  ⁵ tn Or “indeed.”

[40:5]  ⁶ tn Heb “the mouth of the Lord has spoken” (so NASB, NIV, NRSV).

[53:4]  ⁷ sn Illness and pain stand by metonymy (or perhaps as metaphors) for sin and its effects, as vv. 11-12 make clear.

[53:4]  ⁸ tn The words “for something he had done” are supplied in the translation for clarification. The group now realizes he suffered because of his identification with them, not simply because he was a special target of divine anger.
