Yesaya 30:5

30:5 all will be put to shame ¹ 

because of a nation that cannot help them,

who cannot give them aid or help,

but only shame and disgrace.”

44:14 You made us ²  an object of ridicule ³  among the nations;

foreigners treat us with contempt. ⁴ 

Yesaya 20:4-5

20:4 so the king of Assyria will lead away the captives of Egypt and the exiles of Cush, both young and old. They will be in undergarments and barefoot, with the buttocks exposed; the Egyptians will be publicly humiliated. ⁵  20:5 Those who put their hope in Cush and took pride in Egypt will be afraid and embarrassed. ⁶ 

[30:5]  ¹ tn The present translation follows the marginal (Qere) reading of the Hebrew text; the consonantal text (Kethib) has “made to stink, decay.”

[44:14]  ² tn The prefixed verbal form is a preterite (without vav [ו] consecutive).

[44:14]  ³ tn Heb “a proverb,” or “[the subject of] a mocking song.”

[44:14]  ⁴ tn Heb “a shaking of the head among the peoples.” Shaking the head was a derisive gesture (see Jer 18:16; Lam 2:15).

[20:4]  ⁵ tn Heb “lightly dressed and barefoot, and bare with respect to the buttocks, the nakedness of Egypt.”

[20:5]  ⁶ tn Heb “and they will be afraid and embarrassed because of Cush their hope and Egypt their beauty.”
