Ideal Israel Delivers the Exiles

49:1 Listen to me, you coastlands! ¹ 

Pay attention, you people who live far away!

The Lord summoned me from birth; ² 

he commissioned me when my mother brought me into the world. ³ 

Yesaya 66:19

66:19 I will perform a mighty act among them ⁴  and then send some of those who remain to the nations – to Tarshish, Pul, ⁵  Lud ⁶  (known for its archers ⁷ ), Tubal, Javan, ⁸  and to the distant coastlands ⁹  that have not heard about me or seen my splendor. They will tell the nations of my splendor.

[66:19]  ⁴ tn Heb “and I will set a sign among them.” The precise meaning of this statement is unclear. Elsewhere “to set a sign” means “perform a mighty act” (Ps 78:43; Jer 32:20), “make [someone] an object lesson” (Ezek 14:8), and “erect a [literal] standard” (Ps 74:4).

[25:22]  ¹¹ sn Tyre and Sidon are mentioned within the judgment on the Philistines in Jer 47:4. They were Phoenician cities to the north and west of Judah on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea in what is now Lebanon.
