Yesaya 51:13-15

51:13 Why do you forget ¹  the Lord, who made you,

who stretched out the sky ² 

and founded the earth?

Why do you constantly tremble all day long ³ 

at the anger of the oppressor,

when he makes plans to destroy?

Where is the anger of the oppressor? ⁴ 

51:14 The one who suffers ⁵  will soon be released;

he will not die in prison, ⁶ 

he will not go hungry. ⁷ 

51:15 I am the Lord your God,

who churns up the sea so that its waves surge.

The Lord who commands armies is his name!

[51:13]  ¹ tn Heb “and that you forget.”

[51:13]  ² tn Or “the heavens” (also in v. 16). The Hebrew term שָׁמַיִם (shamayim) may be translated “heavens” or “sky” depending on the context.

[51:13]  ³ tn Heb “and that you tremble constantly all the day.”

[51:13]  ⁴ tn The question anticipates the answer, “Ready to disappear!” See v. 14.

[51:14]  ⁵ tn Heb “who is stooped over” (under a burden).

[51:14]  ⁶ tn Heb “the pit” (so KJV); ASV, NAB “die and go down into the pit”; NASB, NIV “dungeon”; NCV “prison.”

[51:14]  ⁷ tn Heb “he will not lack his bread.”
