Yosua 11:23

11:23 Joshua conquered ¹  the whole land, just as the Lord had promised Moses, ²  and he assigned Israel their tribal portions. ³  Then the land was free of war.

3:1 These were the nations the Lord permitted to remain so he could use them to test Israel – he wanted to test all those who had not experienced battle against the Canaanites. ⁴

4:24 His royal court was so large because ⁵  he ruled over all the kingdoms west of the Euphrates River from Tiphsah ⁶  to Gaza; he was at peace with all his neighbors. ⁷ 

[11:23]  ¹ tn Heb “took.”

[11:23]  ² tn Heb “according to all which the Lord said to Moses.” The translation assumes this refers to the promise of the land (see 1:3). Another possibility is that it refers to the Lord’s instructions, in which case the phrase could be translated, “just as the Lord had instructed Moses” (so NLT; cf. also NIV “had directed Moses”).

[11:23]  ³ tn Heb “and Joshua gave it for an inheritance to Israel according to their allotted portions by their tribes.”

[3:1]  ⁴ tn Heb “did not know the wars of Canaan.”

[4:24]  ⁵ tn Heb “because.” The words “his royal court was so large” are added to facilitate the logical connection with the preceding verse.

[4:24]  ⁶ sn Tiphsah. This was located on the Euphrates River.

[4:24]  ⁷ tn Heb “for he was ruling over all [the region] beyond the River, from Tiphsah to Gaza, over all the kingdoms beyond the River, and he had peace on every side all around.”
