Israel Commemorates the Crossing

4:1 When the entire nation was on the other side, ¹  the Lord told Joshua,

Yosua 6:7

6:7 And he told ²  the army, ³  “Move ahead ⁴  and march around the city, with armed troops going ahead of the ark of the Lord.”

Yosua 24:16

24:16 The people responded, “Far be it from us to abandon the Lord so we can ⁵  worship ⁶  other gods!

Yosua 24:21

24:21 The people said to Joshua, “No! We really will ⁷  worship ⁸  the Lord!”

[4:1]  ¹ tn Heb “And when all the nation had finished crossing the Jordan.”

[6:7]  ² tn An alternative reading is “and they said.” In this case the subject is indefinite and the verb should be translated as passive, “[the army] was told.”

[6:7]  ³ tn Heb “the people.”

[6:7]  ⁴ tn Heb “pass by.”

[24:16]  ⁵ tn Heb “to.”

[24:16]  ⁶ tn Or “can serve.”

[24:21]  ⁷ tn The translation assumes that כִּי (ki) is emphatic. Another option is to take it as explanatory, “No, for we will….”
