[6:21]  1 tn Heb “all which was in the city.”

[10:41]  2 tn Heb “and Joshua struck them down, from Kadesh Barnea even to Gaza, and all the land of Goshen, even to Gibeon.”

[1:4]  3 tn Heb “all the land of the Hittites.” The expression “the land of the Hittites” does not refer to Anatolia (modern Turkey), where the ancient Hittite kingdom of the second millennium b.c. was located, but rather to Syria, the “Hatti land” mentioned in inscriptions of the first millennium b.c. (see HALOT 1:363). The phrase is omitted in the LXX and may be a scribal addition.

[1:4]  4 tn Heb “the Great Sea,” the typical designation for the Mediterranean Sea.

[1:4]  5 tn Heb “From the wilderness and this Lebanon even to the great river, the River Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, even to the great sea [at] the place where the sun sets, your territory will be.”

[11:8]  6 map For location see Map1 A1; JP3 F3; JP4 F3.

[11:8]  7 tn The meaning of the Hebrew name “Misrephoth Maim” is perhaps “lime-kilns by the water” (see HALOT 2:641).

[8:25]  8 tn Heb “fell.”

[10:10]  9 tn Or “caused to panic.”

[10:10]  10 tn Heb “he.” The referent is probably Israel (mentioned at the end of the previous sentence in the verse; cf. NIV, NRSV), but it is also possible that the Lord should be understood as the referent (cf. NASB “and He slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon”), or even Joshua (cf. NEB “and Joshua defeated them utterly in Gibeon”).

[10:10]  11 tn Heb “struck them down with a great striking down.”

[10:10]  12 tn Or “ascent.”

[12:3]  13 tn The words “his kingdom included” are supplied in the translation for clarification.

[12:3]  14 sn The Sea of Kinnereth is another name for the Sea of Galilee. See the note on the word “Kinnereth” in 11:2.

[12:3]  15 sn The Salt Sea is another name for the Dead Sea.

[19:29]  16 map For location see Map1 A2; Map2 G2; Map4 A1; JP3 F3; JP4 F3.

[11:17]  17 tn Heb “and struck them down and killed them.”

[12:2]  18 tn Or perhaps, “reigned.”

[12:2]  19 tc The MT reads here, “and the middle of the valley,” but the reading “the city in the middle of valley” can be reconstructed on the basis of Josh 13:9, 16.

[12:7]  20 tn Heb “Joshua gave it to the tribes of Israel as a possession according to their allotted portions.”

[13:3]  21 tn Heb “the Shihor”; the word “River” is not in the Hebrew text, but has been supplied to clarify the meaning.

[13:3]  22 tn Heb “in front of.”

[13:3]  23 tn Heb “it is reckoned to the Canaanites.”

[13:3]  24 tn Heb “the five lords of the Philistines, the Gazaite, the Ashdodite, the Ashkelonite, the Gathite, and the Ekronite, and the Avvites.”
