More Testimony About Jesus

5:31 “If I testify about myself, my testimony is not true. 5:32 There is another 3  who testifies about me, and I know the testimony he testifies about me is true. 5:33 You have sent to John, 4  and he has testified to the truth. 5:34 (I do not accept 5  human testimony, but I say this so that you may be saved.) 5:35 He was a lamp that was burning and shining, 6  and you wanted to rejoice greatly for a short time 7  in his light.

5:36 “But I have a testimony greater than that from John. For the deeds 8  that the Father has assigned me to complete – the deeds 9  I am now doing – testify about me that the Father has sent me.

[5:10]  1 sn This verse is a parenthesis in John’s argument.

[3:33]  2 tn Or “is true.”

[5:32]  3 sn To whom does another refer? To John the Baptist or to the Father? In the nearer context, v. 33, it would seem to be John the Baptist. But v. 34 seems to indicate that Jesus does not receive testimony from men. Probably it is better to view v. 32 as identical to v. 37, with the comments about the Baptist as a parenthetical digression.

[5:33]  4 sn John refers to John the Baptist.

[5:34]  5 tn Or “I do not receive.”

[5:35]  6 sn He was a lamp that was burning and shining. Sir 48:1 states that the word of Elijah was “a flame like a torch.” Because of the connection of John the Baptist with Elijah (see John 1:21 and the note on John’s reply, “I am not”), it was natural for Jesus to apply this description to John.

[5:35]  7 tn Grk “for an hour.”

[5:36]  8 tn Or “works.”

[5:36]  9 tn Grk “complete, which I am now doing”; the referent of the relative pronoun has been specified by repeating “deeds” from the previous clause.

[5:39]  10 tn Or “Study the scriptures thoroughly” (an imperative). For the meaning of the verb see G. Delling, TDNT 2:655-57.

[5:39]  11 sn In them you possess eternal life. Note the following examples from the rabbinic tractate Pirqe Avot (“The Sayings of the Fathers”): Pirqe Avot 2:8, “He who has acquired the words of the law has acquired for himself the life of the world to come”; Pirqe Avot 6:7, “Great is the law for it gives to those who practice it life in this world and in the world to come.”

[5:39]  12 tn The words “same scriptures” are not in the Greek text, but are supplied to clarify the referent (“these”).

[8:17]  13 sn An allusion to Deut 17:6.

[8:18]  14 tn Grk “I am the one who testifies about myself.”

[8:19]  15 tn Grk “Then they were saying to him.” The imperfect verb has been translated with ingressive force here because of the introduction of a new line of questioning by the Pharisees. Jesus had just claimed his Father as a second witness; now his opponents want to know who his father is.

[8:19]  16 sn If you knew me you would know my Father too. Jesus’ reply is based on his identity with the Father (see also John 1:18; 14:9).

[10:38]  17 tn Or “works.”

[10:38]  sn Jesus says that in the final analysis, the deeds he did should indicate whether he was truly from the Father. If the authorities could not believe in him, it would be better to believe in the deeds he did than not to believe at all.

[10:38]  18 tn Or “so that you may learn.”

[5:32]  19 tn Or “things.” They are preaching these things even to the hostile leadership.

[5:32]  20 sn Those who obey. The implication, of course, is that the leadership is disobeying God.

[17:31]  21 tn Or “fixed.”

[17:31]  22 sn The world refers to the whole inhabited earth.

[17:31]  23 tn Or “appointed.” BDAG 723 s.v. ὁρίζω 2.b has “of persons appoint, designate, declare: God judges the world ἐν ἀνδρὶ ᾧ ὥρισεν through a man whom he has appointed Ac 17:31.”

[17:31]  sn A man whom he designated. Jesus is put in the position of eschatological judge. As judge of the living and the dead, he possesses divine authority (Acts 10:42).

[17:31]  24 tn The participle ἀναστήσας (anasthsa") indicates means here.

[2:4]  25 tn Grk “God bearing witness together” (the phrase “with them” is implied).

[2:4]  26 tn Grk “and distributions of the Holy Spirit.”

[6:18]  27 tn Grk “have taken refuge”; the basis of that refuge is implied in the preceding verse.
