[3:11] 1 tn Heb “for the work of his hands will be done to him.”
[18:1] 2 tn Heb “Woe [to] the land of buzzing wings.” On הוֹי (hoy, “woe, ah”) see the note on the first phrase of 1:4.
[18:1] sn The significance of the qualifying phrase “buzzing wings” is uncertain. Some suggest that the designation points to Cush as a land with many insects. Another possibility is that it refers to the swiftness with which this land’s messengers travel (v. 2a); they move over the sea as swiftly as an insect flies through the air. For a discussion of the options, see J. N. Oswalt, Isaiah (NICOT), 1:359-60.
[23:5] 3 tn Heb “they will be in pain at the report of Tyre.”
[37:18] 4 tn The Hebrew text here has “all the lands,” but the parallel text in 2 Kgs 19:17 has “the nations.”
[40:19] 5 tn Heb “pours out”; KJV “melteth.”
[40:25] 6 sn See the note on the phrase “the Holy One of Israel” in 1:4.
[41:24] 7 tn Heb “an object of disgust [is he who] chooses you.”
[45:10] 8 tn Heb “Woe [to] one who says” (NASB and NIV both similar); NCV “How terrible it will be.”
[45:10] 9 tn See the note at v. 9. This phrase occurs a second time later in this verse.
[45:10] 10 sn Verses 9-10 may allude to the exiles’ criticism that the Lord does not appear to know what he is doing.
