2 Timotius 2:8

Konteks

2:8 Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, a descendant of David; 1  such is my gospel, 2

2 Timotius 2:26

Konteks
2:26 and they will come to their senses and escape the devil’s trap where they are held captive 3  to do his will. 4

2 Timotius 1:2

Konteks
1:2 to Timothy, my dear child. Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord!

2 Timotius 3:4

Konteks
3:4 treacherous, reckless, conceited, loving pleasure rather than loving God.

2 Timotius 4:4

Konteks
4:4 And they will turn away from hearing the truth, but on the other hand they will turn aside to myths. 5

2 Timotius 1:15

Konteks

1:15 You know that everyone in the province of Asia 6  deserted me, including Phygelus and Hermogenes.

2 Timotius 2:20

Konteks

2:20 Now in a wealthy home 7  there are not only gold and silver vessels, but also ones made of wood and of clay, and some are for honorable use, but others for ignoble use. 8

2 Timotius 1:13

Konteks
1:13 Hold to the standard 9  of sound words that you heard from me and do so with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. 10

2 Timotius 2:18

Konteks
2:18 They have strayed from the truth 11  by saying that the resurrection has already occurred, and they are undermining some people’s faith.

2 Timotius 2:2

Konteks
2:2 And entrust what you heard me say 12  in the presence of many others as witnesses 13  to faithful people 14  who will be competent 15  to teach others as well.

2 Timotius 4:21

Konteks
4:21 Make every effort to come before winter. Greetings to you from Eubulus, Pudens, Linus, Claudia, and all the brothers and sisters. 16

2 Timotius 4:15

Konteks
4:15 You be on guard against him 17  too, because he vehemently opposed our words.

2 Timotius 2:21

Konteks
2:21 So if someone cleanses himself of such behavior, 18  he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart, useful for the Master, prepared for every good work.

2 Timotius 3:11

Konteks
3:11 as well as the persecutions and sufferings 19  that happened to me in Antioch, 20  in Iconium, and in Lystra. 21  I endured these persecutions and the Lord delivered me from them all.

2 Timotius 4:17

Konteks
4:17 But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message 22  would be fully proclaimed 23  for all the Gentiles to hear. And so I was delivered from the lion’s mouth!

2 Timotius 1:1

Konteks
Salutation

1:1 From Paul, 24  an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, to further the promise 25  of life in Christ Jesus,

2 Timotius 3:5

Konteks
3:5 They will maintain the outward appearance 26  of religion but will have repudiated its power. So avoid people like these. 27

2 Timotius 2:6

Konteks
2:6 The farmer who works hard ought to have the first share of the crops.

2 Timotius 4:18

Konteks
4:18 The Lord will deliver me from every evil deed and will bring me safely 28  into his heavenly kingdom. To him 29  be glory for ever and ever! 30  Amen.

2 Timotius 1:18

Konteks
1:18 May the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on that day! 31  And you know very well all the ways he served me in Ephesus. 32

2 Timotius 3:8

Konteks
3:8 And just as Jannes and Jambres 33  opposed Moses, so these people – who have warped minds and are disqualified in the faith 34  – also oppose the truth.

2 Timotius 1:8-9

Konteks
1:8 So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord 35  or of me, a prisoner for his sake, but by 36  God’s power accept your share of suffering 37  for the gospel. 1:9 He is the one who saved us 38  and called us with a holy calling, not based on 39  our works but on his own purpose and grace, granted to us in Christ Jesus before time began, 40

2 Timotius 2:14

Konteks
Dealing with False Teachers

2:14 Remind people 41  of these things and solemnly charge them 42  before the Lord 43  not to wrangle over words. This is of no benefit; it just brings ruin on those who listen. 44

2 Timotius 2:19

Konteks
2:19 However, God’s solid foundation remains standing, bearing this seal: “The Lord knows those who are his,” 45  and “Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord 46  must turn away from evil.”

2 Timotius 2:9

Konteks
2:9 for which I suffer hardship to the point of imprisonment 47  as a criminal, but God’s message 48  is not imprisoned! 49

2 Timotius 2:1

Konteks
Serving Faithfully Despite Hardship

2:1 So you, my child, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

2 Timotius 1:7

Konteks
1:7 For God did not give us a Spirit 50  of fear but of power and love and self-control.

2 Timotius 1:11

Konteks
1:11 For this gospel 51  I was appointed a preacher and apostle and teacher. 52

2 Timotius 2:16

Konteks
2:16 But avoid profane chatter, 53  because those occupied with it will stray further and further into ungodliness, 54

2 Timotius 3:14

Konteks
3:14 You, however, must continue 55  in the things you have learned and are confident about. You know 56  who taught you 57

2 Timotius 2:22

Konteks
2:22 But keep away from youthful passions, and pursue righteousness, faithfulness, love, and peace, in company with others 58  who call on the Lord from a pure heart. 59

2 Timotius 3:15

Konteks
3:15 and how from infancy you have known the holy writings, which are able to give you wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

2 Timotius 2:15

Konteks
2:15 Make every effort to present yourself before God as a proven worker who does not need to be ashamed, teaching the message of truth accurately. 60

2 Timotius 4:13

Konteks
4:13 When you come, bring with you the cloak I left in Troas with Carpas and the scrolls, especially the parchments.

2 Timotius 2:3

Konteks
2:3 Take your share of suffering 61  as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.

2 Timotius 3:7

Konteks
3:7 Such women are always seeking instruction, 62  yet never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth.

2 Timotius 2:25

Konteks
2:25 correcting 63  opponents with gentleness. Perhaps God will grant them repentance and then knowledge of the truth 64

2 Timotius 4:2

Konteks
4:2 Preach the message, 65  be ready 66  whether it is convenient or not, 67  reprove, rebuke, exhort 68  with complete patience and instruction.

2 Timotius 1:14

Konteks
1:14 Protect that good thing 69  entrusted to you, through the Holy Spirit who lives within us.

2 Timotius 2:13

Konteks

2:13 If we are unfaithful, he remains faithful, since he cannot deny himself. 70

2 Timotius 2:23

Konteks
2:23 But reject foolish and ignorant 71  controversies, because you know they breed infighting. 72

2 Timotius 3:12

Konteks
3:12 Now in fact all who want to live godly lives in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.

2 Timotius 3:6

Konteks
3:6 For some of these insinuate themselves 73  into households and captivate weak women 74  who are overwhelmed with sins and led along by various passions.

2 Timotius 3:16

Konteks
3:16 Every scripture 75  is inspired by God 76  and useful for teaching, for reproof, 77  for correction, and for training in righteousness,

[2:8]  1 tn Grk “of David’s seed” (an idiom for physical descent).

[2:8]  2 tn Grk “according to my gospel.”

[2:26]  3 tn Grk “having been captured by him.”

[2:26]  4 tn Grk “for that one’s will,” referring to the devil, but with a different pronoun than in the previous phrase “by him.” Some have construed “for his will” with the earlier verb and referred the pronoun to God: “come to their senses and escape the devil’s trap (though they have been captured by him) in order to do His will.” In Classical Greek the shift in pronouns would suggest this, but in Koine Greek this change is not significant. The more natural sense is a reference to the devil’s will.

[4:4]  5 sn These myths were legendary tales characteristic of the false teachers in Ephesus and Crete. See parallels in 1 Tim 1:4; 4:7; and Titus 1:14.

[1:15]  6 tn Grk “Asia”; in the NT this always refers to the Roman province of Asia, made up of about one-third of the west and southwest end of modern Asia Minor. Asia lay to the west of the region of Phrygia and Galatia. The words “the province of” are supplied to indicate to the modern reader that this does not refer to the continent of Asia.

[2:20]  7 tn Grk “a great house.”

[2:20]  8 tn Grk “for dishonor,” probably referring to vessels used for refuse or excrement.

[1:13]  9 tn Or “pattern.”

[1:13]  10 tn Grk “in faith and love in Christ Jesus.”

[1:13]  sn With the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. This describes the manner in which Timothy must hold to the standard (similar to Paul’s call for him to give attention to his life and his teaching in 1 Tim 4:11-16).

[2:18]  11 tn Grk “have deviated concerning the truth.”

[2:2]  12 tn Grk “what you heard from me” (cf. 1:13).

[2:2]  13 tn Grk “through many witnesses.” The “through” is used here to show attendant circumstances: “accompanied by,” “in the presence of.”

[2:2]  14 tn Grk “faithful men”; but here ἀνθρώποις (anqrwpoi") is generic, referring to both men and women.

[2:2]  15 tn Or “able” (see Paul’s use of this word in regard to ministry in 2 Cor 2:16; 3:5-6).

[4:21]  16 tn Grk “brothers,” but the Greek word may be used for “brothers and sisters” or “fellow Christians” as here (cf. BDAG 18 s.v. ἀδελφός 1, where considerable nonbiblical evidence for the plural ἀδελφοί [adelfoi] meaning “brothers and sisters” is cited).

[4:15]  17 tn Grk “against whom,” as a continuation of the previous clause. Because of the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, a new sentence was started here in the translation.

[2:21]  18 tn Grk “from these,” alluding to the errors and deeds of the false teachers described in vv. 14-19.

[3:11]  19 tn Grk “persecutions, sufferings,” as a continuation of the series from v. 10.

[3:11]  20 map For location see JP1 E2; JP2 E2; JP3 E2; JP4 E2.

[3:11]  21 sn In Antioch, in Iconium, and in Lystra. See Acts 13-14 for the account of these persecutions.

[3:11]  map For location see JP1 E2; JP2 E2; JP3 E2

[4:17]  22 tn Or “the preaching.”

[4:17]  23 tn Grk “might be completely fulfilled.”

[1:1]  24 tn Grk “Paul.” The word “from” is not in the Greek text, but has been supplied to indicate the sender of the letter.

[1:1]  25 tn Grk “for the promise…” or possibly “in accordance with the promise…”

[3:5]  26 tn Or “form.”

[3:5]  sn Outward appearance. Paul’s contrast with power in 3:5b shows that he regards this “form” to be outward, one of appearance rather than reality (cf. 1 Cor 4:19-20; 1 Thess 1:5).

[3:5]  27 tn Grk “and avoid these,” with the word “people” implied.

[4:18]  28 tn Grk “save me.”

[4:18]  29 tn Grk “to whom.” Because of the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, a new sentence was started here in the translation.

[4:18]  30 tn Grk “unto the ages of the ages,” an emphatic way of speaking about eternity in Greek.

[1:18]  31 sn That day is a reference to the day when Onesiphorus (v. 16) stands before Christ to give account for his service (cf. v. 12; 1 Cor 3:13; 2 Cor 5:9-10).

[1:18]  32 tn Grk “all the ways he served in Ephesus.”

[1:18]  map For location see JP1 D2; JP2 D2; JP3 D2; JP4 D2.

[3:8]  33 sn Jannes and Jambres were the traditional names of two of Pharaoh’s magicians who opposed Moses at the time of the Exodus.

[3:8]  34 tn Grk “disapproved concerning the faith.”

[1:8]  35 tn Grk “the testimony of our Lord.”

[1:8]  36 tn Or “according to.”

[1:8]  37 tn Grk “suffer hardship together,” implying “join with me in suffering.”

[1:9]  38 tn More literally, “who saved us,” as a description of God in v. 8. Because of the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, a new sentence was started here in the translation.

[1:9]  39 tn Or “according to,” or “by.”

[1:9]  40 tn Grk “before eternal times.”

[2:14]  41 tn Grk “remind of these things,” implying “them” or “people” as the object.

[2:14]  42 tn Grk “solemnly charging.” The participle διαμαρτυρόμενος (diamarturomeno") has been translated as a finite verb due to requirements of contemporary English style.

[2:14]  43 tc ‡ Most witnesses (A D Ψ 048 1739 1881 Ï sy) have κυρίου (kuriou, “Lord”) instead of θεοῦ (qeou, “God”) here, while a few have Χριστοῦ (Cristou, “Christ”; 206 {429 1758}). θεοῦ, however, is well supported by א C F G I 614 629 630 1175 al. Internally, the Pastorals never elsewhere use the expression ἐνώπιον κυρίου (enwpion kuriou, “before the Lord”), but consistently use ἐνώπιον θεοῦ (“before God”; cf. 1 Tim 2:3; 5:4, 21; 6:13; 2 Tim 4:1). But this fact could be argued both ways: The author’s style may be in view, or scribes may have adjusted the wording to conform it to the Pastorals’ universal expression. Further, only twice in the NT (Jas 4:10 [v.l. θεοῦ]; Rev 11:4 [v.l. θεοῦ]) is the expression ἐνώπιον κυρίου found. That such an expression is not found in the corpus Paulinum seems to be sufficient impetus for scribes to change the wording here. Thus, although the external evidence is somewhat on the side of θεοῦ, the internal evidence is on the side of κυρίου. A decision is difficult, but κυρίου is the preferred reading.

[2:14]  44 tn Grk “[it is] beneficial for nothing, for the ruin of those who listen.”

[2:19]  45 sn A quotation from Num 16:5.

[2:19]  46 tn Grk “names the name of the Lord.”

[2:9]  47 tn Or “chains,” “bonds.”

[2:9]  48 tn Or “word.”

[2:9]  49 tn Or “chained,” “bound.”

[1:7]  50 tn Or “a spirit,” denoting the human personality under the Spirit’s influence as in 1 Cor 4:21; Gal 6:1; 1 Pet 3:4. But the reference to the Holy Spirit at the end of this section (1:14) makes it likely that it begins this way also, so that the Holy Spirit is the referent.

[1:11]  51 tn Grk “for which.”

[1:11]  52 tc Most mss (א2 C D F G Ψ 1739 1881 Ï latt sy co) have ἐθνῶν (eqnwn, “of the Gentiles”) after “teacher.” The shorter reading has poorer external credentials (א* A I 1175 pc), but is preferred because ἐθνῶν probably represents a gloss added by copyists familiar with 1 Tim 2:7. There is no easy explanation for the omission of the word if it were original here.

[2:16]  53 sn Profane chatter was apparently a characteristic of the false teachers in Ephesus (cf. 1 Tim 1:3-4; 4:7; 6:20).

[2:16]  54 tn Grk “they [who engage in it] will progress even more in ungodliness.”

[3:14]  55 tn Grk “but you, continue,” a command.

[3:14]  56 tn Grk “knowing,” giving the reasons for continuing as v. 14 calls for.

[3:14]  57 tn Grk “those from whom you learned.”

[2:22]  58 tn Grk “and peace, with those.”

[2:22]  59 sn In company with others who call on the Lord from a pure heart alludes to the value of the community of believers for the development of Christian virtues.

[2:15]  60 sn Accurately is a figure of speech that literally means something like “cutting a straight road.” In regard to the message of truth, it means “correctly handling” or “imparting it without deviation.”

[2:3]  61 tn Grk “suffer hardship together,” implying “join with me and others in suffering” (cf. 1:8).

[3:7]  62 tn Grk “always learning,” continuing the description of the women from v. 6. Because of the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, a new sentence was started here in the translation.

[2:25]  63 sn Correcting is the word for “child-training” or “discipline.” It is often positive (training, educating) but here denotes the negative side (correcting, disciplining).

[2:25]  64 tn Grk “repentance unto knowledge of the truth.”

[4:2]  65 tn Or “the word.”

[4:2]  66 tn Or “be persistent.”

[4:2]  67 tn Grk “in season, out of season.”

[4:2]  68 tn Or “encourage.”

[1:14]  69 sn That good thing (Grk “the good deposit”) refers to the truth of the gospel committed to Timothy (cf. 1 Tim 6:20).

[2:13]  70 sn If we are unfaithful…he cannot deny himself. This could be (1) a word of warning (The Lord will exact punishment; he cannot deny his holiness) or (2) a word of hope (Because of who he is, he remains faithful to us despite our lapses). The latter is more likely, since Paul consistently cites God’s faithfulness as a reassurance, not as a warning (cf. especially Rom 3:3; also 1 Cor 1:9; 10:13; 2 Cor 1:18; 1 Thess 5:24; 2 Thess 3:3).

[2:23]  71 tn Or “uninstructed,” “silly.”

[2:23]  72 tn Or “fights,” although this could suggest weapons and blows, whereas in the present context this is not the primary focus. Although “quarrel” is frequently used here (NAB, NIV, NRSV) it may be understood to refer to a relatively minor disagreement.

[3:6]  73 tn Grk “For from these are those who sneak.”

[3:6]  74 tn Or “silly women.”

[3:16]  75 tn Or “All scripture.”

[3:16]  sn There is very little difference in sense between every scripture (emphasizing the individual portions) and “all scripture” (emphasizing the composite whole). The former option is preferred, because it fits the normal use of the word “all/every” in Greek (πᾶς, pas) as well as Paul’s normal sense for the word “scripture” in the singular without the article, as here. So every scripture means “every individual portion of scripture.”

[3:16]  76 sn Inspired by God. Some have connected this adjective in a different way and translated it as “every inspired scripture is also useful.” But this violates the parallelism of the two adjectives in the sentence, and the arrangement of words makes clear that both should be taken as predicate adjectives: “every scripture is inspired…and useful.”

[3:16]  77 tn Or “rebuke,” “censure.” The Greek word implies exposing someone’s sin in order to bring correction.
